In ESP pumped wells, dealing with sand is a big issue; especially in unconventional well completions where multi-stage fracking sand will flow back during production. ESPs commonly suffer from severe damage caused by frac sand and other residual solids that routinely cut short ESP performance. Failure modes include pump erosion, sand accumulation, plugging, electrical and mechanical stresses and inability to bring the pump back on after a shutdown.

ESP Shutdowns

ESPs can normally cope with sand passing through the pump; but if the ESP shuts down for any reason, previously pumped sand that is in suspension in the tubing string, will fall back onto the top stages and wreak havoc upon attempted restart. Attempted restart on a sand-plugged pump can cause immediate destruction of the ESP or simply make the pump unable to start. Either way, pulling of the entire ESP completion and replacing the downhole Pump is required before production can resume.

ESPs shut down for a variety of reasons including power failure, pump off and production shutdowns. ESPs in unconventional wells have to cope with huge sand fallback to the upper pump due to the vast quantities of proppant sand injected into the frac which subsequently gets reproduced through the ESP system.

Our flagship patented product, SandGuardTM is a new technology tool located in the tubing string (just above the pump discharge) that captures fallback sand and quarantines it away from the pump, making restarting of the ESP trouble free. Proven through hundreds of installations, SandGuardTM has demonstrated huge increases in ESP run times in sandy wells translating into demonstrable increased profits for operators.

Extending ESP Run Life

Multilift’s Cyclone is designed to extend the run life of ESPs in sand producing wells. Developed using proven vortex technology with no moving parts, Cyclone can be retrofitted to any ESP well and is deployed efficiently by suspending it directly below the ESP, requiring no downhole preparation.

The high-efficiency centrifugal action within Cyclone’s chamber separates sand and suspended solids – sending desanded fluid to the ESP and sand and solids to a ‘tailpipe’ below, preventing the sand from being produced through the pump.
